Like so many others doing conversion projects, I grew up watching Knight Rider
when it originally aired on T.V. in 1982. I was immediately drawn to the show,
mostly because of the futuristic car it featured. K.I.T.T. was truly
one-of-a-kind and I dreamed that one day I would have the opportunity to own a
car like it. From then on the only type of car that every really "turned my
head" was the Pontiac Firebird Trans/Am.

I have owned a total of three Firebirds. The first was a 1988 which I acquired
in March 1992. It was the first car that I owned and I absolutely loved it. The
'88 served me very well until May 1996 when I traded it in for a '94 Firebird. I
only had the '94 for about four months before I was forced to trade it in.
I relied solely on my Geo Metro to get me around until I was able to get another
Firebird. I knew that someday I would get another Firebird and that it would be
a 3rd generation ('82-'92) F-body style.
In March 2000 my four years of waiting were over
and I was able to get back into a Firebird. I got a '92 V6 3.1 Liter with 54,000
miles on it. It was black with tan interior that was in almost perfect
condition. I knew that this was the car that I was going to convert
into KITT. After getting on-line and finding all the conversion companies
out there, my desire to convert my car increased. I wasn't quite sure what I was
going to do and how I was going to go about it, though.
Thanks to the Internet, I was able to find
information and products so that I could make my dream a reality.
When I found
Knight Registries, I
was very excited. It was great to see so many others out there doing the very
thing that I hoped to do. After seeing all of the great cars on the registry, I
decided that I was going to do a conversion, but not an "exact" replica. I
wanted my car to look very similar to K.I.T.T. but have its own uniqueness
also.I wasn't exactly sure how it was all going to play out. I had some general
idea, but it wasn't set in stone. One thing I was sure about was that the first
stage of the conversion was going to concentrate on the exterior. So, the
project began in late Spring 2000.
Since then the project has taken shape and has had its ups and
downs. Check out the development
pages on this site to get more details on the progress made from 2001 - 2005.
For the past couple of years I've hardly used the car and it has been sitting in
my garage. Life, house projects, and family have taken precedence and I
haven't done much with KITT.
Lately that has been changing, though. I
updated my dashboard with Don Colie's new 2 TV design in November 2008. I
also recently updated my ADiAT scanner.
Another change I have made to my car is the hood. I decided to go back and
get the same style
cowl hood
that KITT had in the show.
I'm looking forward to get back into the car show
and cruise scene and get out and enjoy my car again.
